Fantastic Fuschias!

If you’re looking for a plant that will bloom from late Spring until the temperatures drop in Autumn, and you have a shady spot in your garden, then fuschias are an ideal choice.

If you’re looking for a plant that will bloom from late Spring until the temperatures drop in Autumn, and you have a shady spot in your garden, then fuschias are an ideal choice. They will provide an amazing show of colour in hanging baskets, containers or in borders. The choice of varieties is huge both in colours, sizes and shapes with either lush green, variegated or bronze foliage.

Fuschias can tolerate early morning sun, but will scorch if planted in the harsh midday sun. The time for planting fuschias is early spring before the summer heat kicks in, especially in containers or hanging baskets. An ideal position for fuschias grown in borders is under a tree, where they will love the dappled sun and shade. The upright bush type is perfect for border planting, or in a large patio container, where it will look amazing, surrounded by lobelia, alyssum or begonias. The trailing basket variety looks fabulous in hanging baskets. Fuschias do need plenty of light to flower well, so their position shouldn’t be in a dense, dark shady area.

To plant a fuschia in the garden dig a hole twice the size of the pot you have bought. Mix the removed soil with compost, replace half in the hole, carefully add the fuschia plant and replace the remaining soil mix. Water well. Fuschias do need water, whether in the ground, containers or hanging baskets, but don’t like soggy feet so allow to dry out before watering again. A sprinkling of general fertiliser every 6 weeks during the growing season will ensure a profusion of beautiful blooms. A mulch around border fuschias will help keep roots cool and moist. Interestingly, the fruit of the fuschia is edible, with a subtle grape spiced with black pepper taste!

There’s a lot to love about fuschias!
